Plymouth Brethren church hall proposal approved after decade-long search
A decade-long effort by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church to secure a place of worship has received approval from East Devon District Council. The planning committee voted in favor of a new hall at Oilmill Cross, Clyst St Mary, despite concerns about building in a rural area. The decision marks a significant step forward for the congregation, which has sought a suitable site for over ten years.
The proposed single-storey building, complete with parking and landscaping, was approved at a meeting on 6 October. Applicant Barry Coates, a church member, explained that the existing village church and hall did not meet the congregation’s religious needs. He noted that nine households live in the village and another nine on its fringes, emphasizing the community’s established presence.
Coates highlighted the practical benefits of the new hall, estimating that it would reduce annual vehicle miles by 11,000. He argued that the current lack of a local place of worship forces congregants to travel elsewhere, creating unnecessary hardship. The proposed site is within walking distance of several homes, including those of supporter Michael Short, who has lived in Clyst St Mary for over 15 years.
While the council acknowledged the congregation’s desire for a local hall, some members raised concerns. Cllr Mike Howe, a ward member, expressed support for the congregation’s ambition but questioned whether the countryside location was the best option. He suggested exploring alternative sites within the village, citing a previous appeal decision that rejected a development plan for nine homes on adjacent land.
The council’s approval reflects a balance between accommodating the congregation’s needs and addressing local concerns about rural development. The decision underscores the importance of community needs and the role of local governance in shaping religious infrastructure. As the project moves forward, it will be closely watched by both the congregation and the wider community.
