R&B singer Kehlani’s Cornell performance cancelled over pro-Palestine comments deemed antisemitic
Kehlani, an R&B singer known for her chart-topping albums, was barred from performing at Cornell University in New York State. The university’s president cited concerns that her public statements, including references to the intifada and pro-Palestine activism, were perceived as antisemitic and anti-Israel.
The performance was scheduled for Slope Day, an annual event at Cornell that celebrates the end of the academic year. President Michael I Kotlikoff stated that the decision to cancel the event was made in response to community concerns. He emphasized that while artists have the right to express their views, Slope Day aims to unite the campus community rather than divide it.
Kehlani has publicly supported Palestine on multiple occasions. Her 2024 song “Next 2 U” includes imagery of Palestinian flags and the phrase “long live the intifada,” which has been associated with Palestinian resistance to Israel. The song’s video features a suit stitched with keffiyeh material and includes a T-shirt sold to raise funds for Operation Olive Branch.
In an Instagram post announcing the song, Kehlani referenced the activist Toni Cade Bambara, quoting her aphorism about the role of the artist in making revolution irresistible. She expressed personal apprehension about releasing the song amid the ongoing conflict, describing it as a “terrifying” decision.
Kehlani also criticized some of her peers for their lack of commentary on the Israel-Gaza war in a May 2024 video. She stated, “fuck Israel, fuck Zionism,” reflecting her stance on the issue.
The university’s decision highlights the complex and often contentious discussions surrounding political expression in academic settings. The incident underscores the broader debates about free speech, the role of artists in social movements, and the potential for artistic expression to be perceived as politically charged or even harmful.
