The Salvation Army in York is mobilizing to assist families in need as the holiday season approaches. The organization is anticipating a rise in demand for its services due to ongoing financial challenges faced by many households, including increased costs for groceries and other essentials.

Major Ronald Starnes, core officer administrator, noted that rising prices have made it difficult for families to meet their basic needs. “As everyone knows, prices are up, and we are having difficulty, everyone, making sure every bill can be met, groceries can be had, all those kinds of things, so we’re expecting a greater amount of people to come this year,” he said.

The Salvation Army offers several holiday assistance programs, including Angel Tree, Adopt-a-Family, holiday meal assistance, and the annual Red Kettle campaign. Through Angel Tree, donors can provide Christmas gifts for children in need, while Adopt-a-Family allows community members and groups to support families facing significant hardship during the holidays.

Julie Bowers, director of development, emphasized the importance of community donations and volunteer support. “We rely on our community to provide the services that we do. Every dollar raised here in York stays here in York. It does not go anywhere else,” Bowers said. “Times are really tough right now. Not everyone can afford to make a donation. We also value people’s time, and we always have a need for volunteers.”

In addition to its holiday programs, the Salvation Army provides weekly food assistance and helps families access special Christmas meals. During its December toy distribution, the organization also plans to offer families an opportunity to connect with community advocates and religious leaders in the chapel to discuss additional support.

Lieutenant Yailyn Cordero highlighted the organization’s commitment to more than just material aid. “This year, we have the privilege of not just giving you toys, not just giving you food, we have the privilege of giving you a space to feel seen, to feel cared for, to feel loved,” Cordero said.

The Salvation Army is urging community members to get involved through donations and volunteer opportunities. Those interested in helping can contact the York location to learn more about current needs and ways to support local families this holiday season.
