Seventh-day Adventist Church Agrees to Participate in National Cleaning Day on Sundays Following Agreement with Government Officials
Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja met with Archbishop Samuel Kajoba and other leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to address concerns about the National Cleaning Day, which is traditionally held on the last Saturday of each month. The meeting resulted in an agreement to adjust the day of participation for Adventist members to the last Sunday of the month, respecting their Sabbath observance.
Both parties agreed that Seventh-day Adventist members will take part in the National Cleaning Day initiative on Sundays instead of Saturdays. This change was made in consideration of the church’s religious practices, which include observing the Sabbath from Friday evening to Saturday evening. The agreement was reached following consultations with church leadership, bishops, and their legal teams, as well as guidance from President Yoweri Museveni.
Nabbanja stated that the decision was based on the President’s advice and that the adjustment would allow Adventist members to contribute to the national sanitation campaign while adhering to their religious observances. She noted that Adventist members will still observe a three-hour period at home on Saturday before attending church services at 10:00am. The three-hour lockdown period will be observed from their homes, with church services starting at 10:00am nationwide.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to Archbishop Kajoba for accepting the President’s proposal, emphasizing that the arrangement would help reduce national waste and improve sanitation. She also mentioned that the Cabinet would revisit the issue in the future to develop further proposals. “I want to thank the Archbishop for accepting the President’s proposal,” Nabbanja said. “I know going forward, the garbage around the country will reduce and eventually Cabinet will sit and come up with another proposal on the way forward. But for now, I want to appreciate you for accepting the guidance of President Museveni.”
The update confirms that Seventh-day Adventist members will now participate in National Cleaning Day on the last Sunday of each month, following the agreement between Archbishop Samuel Kajoba and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja. This adjustment reflects a balance between public service and religious observance, aligning with the principle of honoring both civic duty and faith. Micah 6:8 reminds us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, a balance that this agreement seeks to uphold.
