State historical marker dedicated for Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Indianapolis, Indiana
The state historical marker for Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was dedicated on June 20, 2009, in downtown Indianapolis. The marker honors the church building, whose construction was completed in 1870.
The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Marking a structure that has stood for more than a century recalls the church’s long presence in the city, a way of remembering the past and passing the faith on to later generations (Psalm 78:4).
About 65 people attended the dedication. Representatives from the offices of Governor Mitch Daniels, Senator Evan Bayh, Congressman Andre Carson and Mayor Greg Ballard were present.
After the ceremony, Isaac Randolph, Pastor John Lambert, Mrs. Lambert and State Representative Vanessa Summers posed together with the marker. Pastor Lambert played a key role in securing the state historical marker for his church.
