Syro-Malabar Catholics Celebrate Historical Presence in Diocese
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, a branch of the Eastern Catholic Churches in communion with Rome, has a rich heritage rooted in the traditions of the ancient Chaldean Church in Persia. Its members, many of whom trace their lineage to India, have found a growing home within the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, where their faith and liturgical practices are increasingly recognized and supported.
Father Joseph D. Wallace, a priest in the Diocese of Camden, first encountered members of the Syro-Malabar community during his pastoral assignment at Queen of Heaven Parish in Cherry Hill. This parish, now known as the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light, became a gathering place for Syro-Malabar Catholics who regularly attended Mass celebrated by Father Jose Manjakunnel, pastor of Saint Stephen Parish in Pennsauken. These monthly services provided a vital spiritual connection for the community, allowing them to practice their unique rite within the broader Catholic tradition.
The Syro-Malabar Rite, with its distinct liturgical and theological expressions, has a long history stretching back to the early Christian communities of the East. Over time, many Syro-Malabar Catholics have settled in the United States, finding new communities of faith within existing parishes. In the Diocese of Camden, this has led to the establishment of Saint Jude Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, which was dedicated in 2016. The church was formerly known as Saint Lucy Parish, which had merged with four other parishes to form Christ the Redeemer Parish.
Father Vincent Pangola, pastor of Saint Jude Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, recently extended an invitation to Father Wallace to celebrate Mass at his parish. This gesture reflects the deepening sense of belonging and mutual respect between the Syro-Malabar community and the wider Catholic Church in the Diocese of Camden. The continued presence and growth of Syro-Malabar Catholics in the region highlight the importance of preserving and nurturing their unique traditions within the universal Church.
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church’s journey in the United States exemplifies the broader mission of the Eastern Catholic Churches to maintain their distinct identity while remaining in full communion with the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. Their presence in parishes like Saint Jude Syro-Malabar Catholic Church underscores the Church’s commitment to hospitality, unity, and the celebration of diverse liturgical traditions. As the Syro-Malabar community continues to grow, their story serves as a reminder of the richness that comes from embracing both tradition and the shared faith of the Catholic Church.
