The Church of the Nazarene’s Department of Christian Ministry and Formation Engages in Theological Reflection Through Panel Discussion, Conference Participation, and International Collaboration
The Department of Christian Ministry and Formation (CMF) at Midland University (MNU) continues to play a vital role in equipping future ministry leaders with theological depth and critical thinking. Through ongoing reflection, the department supports the church in remaining faithful to the Gospel, fostering a deeper understanding of the faith that informs both proclamation and practice.
This spring, the CMF engaged in three significant events of theological reflection. In February, a panel discussion titled “Perspectives on Violence in Scripture” took place. Moderated by senior Bible and theology major Courtney Roughton, the event brought together faculty members from various disciplines—biblical studies, theology, church history, and Christian education—to explore how to interpret and preach challenging biblical texts that contain violence. The discussion emphasized the value of diverse perspectives in developing a more nuanced understanding of these complex issues.
In March, six students from the CMF attended the Wesleyan Holiness Women Clergy Conference. Led by Adjunct Professor Deanna Hayden, the students participated in workshops, worship, and fellowship that deepened their understanding of women’s roles in ministry and strengthened their sense of community. The experience left a lasting impression on participants, with sophomore ministry major Sage Friedline noting the presence of the Holy Spirit as they learned from and listened to one another.
Freshman ministry major Makayla Bachman reflected on the conference’s impact, describing it as a life-changing experience. She expressed gratitude for the support of women clergy who will guide her in her call to ministry.
In April, four CMF faculty members traveled to Pilar, Argentina, to join over 250 participants at the Global Theology Conference of the Church of the Nazarene. The conference centered on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and included theologians, pastors, and church leaders from all six world regions of the Church of the Nazarene. Participants engaged in worship, prayer, and small group discussions, fostering global theological dialogue and collaboration.
The CMF’s commitment to theological reflection underscores its role in shaping ministry leaders who are both thoughtful and faithful. By engaging with complex issues and global perspectives, the department helps prepare individuals to serve the church with wisdom and integrity.
