Trump Issues Reformation Day Statement on Religious Liberty
President Donald Trump issued a statement on Saturday recognizing Reformation Day and its impact on religious liberty and the foundation of the United States.
The White House statement marked the day in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of All Saints’ Church, also known as the Castle Church, in Wittenberg, Germany. It noted the impact of the Protestant Reformation that Luther began on people seeking a place where they could live and worship freely.
In the statement, Trump wrote that “prayer and faith in Almighty God have stood as the foundation of our strength, the source of our unity, and the fount of our greatness.” He sent his best wishes to Christians across the country who were commemorating the Protestant Reformation and its message of salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
The statement said that Luther’s efforts to put the Scriptures in the hands of ordinary people had ultimately led to the first New Testaments printed in English. It credited William Tyndale, inspired by Luther’s work, with publishing that New Testament 500 years ago, a step it described as shaping the language of Bibles used by America’s founding generation (Psalm 78:4). The statement tied those Scriptures to the religious convictions behind the nation’s founding ideals of God-given rights and individual liberty.
Trump’s statement also said that “the Bible remains a cornerstone of our Nation’s character” and that his administration is working “to restore the moral and religious foundations” that have sustained the republic. He said he would support citizens of faith and defend their place in the public square, and he pointed to the role of churches in strengthening families, serving communities and preserving core values. He closed by encouraging Christians to draw renewed strength from God’s Word.
The same day, the president and First Lady Melania Trump also celebrated Halloween. They shared a video of the day’s festivities as children came to trick-or-treat at the White House.
