The small wooden church, nestled under the Gold Star Bridge in New London, Connecticut, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Polish National Catholic Church. Founded in 1921, the congregation has weathered the passage of time and the shifting demographics of the area, with its membership now numbering around 20. Despite the decline, the church remains a vibrant community, offering a sense of belonging and continuity for those who gather within its walls.

The Polish National Catholic Church, part of the Old Catholic churches, traces its roots to 1897 when it split from the Roman Catholic Church to preserve Polish language and cultural identity. Unlike the Roman Catholic Church, it operates independently of the Pope’s authority, allowing for practices such as married priests and a unique form of confession. The New London church reflects these traditions, with its services structured around a booklet titled “The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass,” guiding members through the liturgy.

Inside the church, the atmosphere is serene, with simple blue and gold windows filtering light into the sanctuary. The sound of interstate traffic above is muffled, creating a quiet space for worship. Rev. Stanley Kaszubski, the pastor, leads the service with a focus on community and faith. The service, lasting about 45 minutes, includes prayers, proclamations, and communion, with Kaszubski dedicating the mass to mothers and encouraging attendees to share their faith with others.

Kaszubski, a native of Poland, has served in various capacities within the denomination, including roles in Manchester and Webster, Massachusetts. He has been the administrator of the New London church for 12 years before becoming pastor last year. His approach is inclusive, welcoming all who seek spiritual guidance and support. The church’s doors are open to anyone, regardless of heritage, and Kaszubski is known for his availability and kindness.

Kathy Donlon, a long-time member, highlights Kaszubski’s welcoming nature as a key aspect of the church’s appeal. His presence and pastoral care contribute to the church’s ability to sustain itself in a changing community. While the congregation is small, its commitment to faith and service remains strong, embodying the values of charity and hospitality. The church continues to serve as a beacon of hope and connection in a neighborhood that has seen significant change over the decades.
