Upward Basketball signups now available at Redding First Church of the Nazarene (Redding, California)
Upward Basketball signups are now open at Redding First Church of the Nazarene, offering local families a new opportunity for young athletes to engage in the sport. The initiative, led by Pastor Colin Duffy, aims to provide an accessible and encouraging environment for children to learn the fundamentals of basketball.
Pastor Duffy noted that while there is already another basketball league in the area, not all children can participate due to various constraints. The Church of the Nazarene’s program seeks to fill this gap by utilizing its underused gym space. “We want to provide another space; another option so that as many kids as possible get to play basketball in an encouraging environment and develop some skills,” he explained.
The program is designed for young participants, with a focus on skill development and character building. Pastor Duffy emphasized that while the goal is not to produce future NBA stars, the emphasis is on nurturing virtues that will benefit the children throughout their lives. “At least they’ll develop skills and character, and virtues, that will bless them through their whole life,” he said.
Registration for the six-weekend season, which begins at the end of January, costs $90. Parents interested in enrolling their children can visit the Redding First Church of the Nazarene located at North Bechelli Lane or contact Pastor Duffy directly at (530) 223-0454.
The Church of the Nazarene continues to engage in community outreach through initiatives like Upward Basketball, reflecting its commitment to supporting local families and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
This effort aligns with the church’s broader mission of serving the community and fostering environments where individuals can grow in both spiritual and physical well-being. By offering such programs, the church seeks to make a positive impact on the lives of young people in Redding.
