King Abdullah II Meets Delegation from Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and Holy Land
His Majesty King Abdullah II met today with a delegation from the Evangelical Lutheran Church, led by Archbishop Dr. Imad Haddad, Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and Holy Land. The meeting took place at the Al Husseiniya Palace in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah II.
During the meeting, His Majesty reaffirmed Jordan’s continued support for the Christian presence in Jerusalem, based on the Hashemite trusteeship of Islamic and Christian holy places in the Holy City. He emphasized that the right of Christians to worship and free access to holy places could not be tolerated.
His Majesty also highlighted the role of the Lutheran churches in promoting peace and stability and in defending the oppressed through their widespread relations and outreach. The Lutheran Church delegation, which included representatives from Jerusalem, the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, and Denmark, as well as the President of the Lutheran World Federation, expressed appreciation for the King’s role in supporting interreligious dialogue and protecting the Christian presence in Palestine, Jordan, and the broader region.
Archbishop Haddad confirmed that the Lutheran Evangelical Church continues to support the Hashemite Trust for Islamic and Christian holy places in Al-Quds Al-Sharif. He noted that since the church’s recognition by His Majesty King Hussein Bin Talal, Tayybullah Tharah, in 1959, Archbishop Minnep Yunnan renewed this support in 2013.
The delegation also stressed the efforts of the Evangelical Lutheran churches to counter the Zionist Christian movement and attempts to politicize religion. They condemned the war on Gaza and attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.
The meeting was attended by His Highness Prince Ghazi Bin Mohammed, Senior Adviser to His Majesty the King on Religious and Cultural Affairs, Personal Envoy of His Majesty, and Director of His Majesty’s Office, Engineer Ala’a Al-Battaina.
