African bishops condemn Africa Initiative and WCA
United Methodist bishops from Africa have said they remain committed to The United Methodist Church and intend to stay in the denomination, despite a possible division expected at the next General Conference, according to a press release dated October 30, 2020.
The bishops stated that the church will continue in Africa after the 2020 General Conference. They also resolved not to support any proposed legislation or plans that call for dividing or dissolving the denomination. The release’s headline states that the bishops condemn the Africa Initiative and the Wesleyan Covenant Association (WCA), but the portion of the release available for this draft does not describe the grounds for that condemnation.
The release is accompanied by a photograph of Bishops Daniel Lunge, Owan Kasap, Mande Muyombo, Eben Nhiwatiwa, Samuel Quire and Daniel Wandabula preparing for prayers at the Chinando prayer site near Mutare, Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Area First Lady Greater Nhiwatiwa explains the history and significance of the site in the photo caption. The bishops’ commitment to remain together in the denomination is presented as a matter of unity (John 17:21).
