Christian Leaders Join Zionist Rabbinic Conference to Support Israel and Oppose Antisemitism
Christian leaders joined the Zionist Rabbinic Coalition’s fourth annual conference in Washington, D.C., marking a first in the event’s history. About 70 rabbis, lay leaders, and rabbinical students gathered over two days in May to engage with experts and government officials. The Zionist Rabbinic Coalition, led by Stuart Weinblatt, rabbi emeritus of Congregation B’nai Tzedek, emphasized the importance of unity among Zionist rabbis as a collective voice.
This year’s conference included a unique Sunday night program featuring Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Sen. Cory Booker. Christian pastors and ministers from about 250 pro-Israel groups joined the event, highlighting shared values between Jewish and Christian communities. Johnson shared his personal experience visiting Israel, including his visit to the valley where David defeated Goliath, which he described as deeply meaningful.
Sen. Cory Booker also spoke about his connection to Israel and the Israeli people, emphasizing the shared faith between the two faiths. Weinblatt noted that this common ground, despite political differences, is significant. He reflected on the historical persecution of Jews by Christians, contrasting it with the current support from Christian allies.
Attendees heard from students who shared experiences of antisemitism and anti-Zionism on college campuses. These students described incidents involving fellow students and professors, as well as the responses they have taken. Weinblatt noted the surprising nature of these experiences even in places with substantial Jewish populations and programs.
The conference underscored the importance of standing against antisemitism and supporting Israel. The collaboration between Jewish and Christian leaders reflects a shared commitment to justice and protection for the vulnerable. This solidarity serves as a reminder of the potential for unity in the face of common challenges.
