Josh Henley, a minister in the Churches of Christ, has been charged with state and federal sex crimes against minors. Henley, 32, was arrested on June 18 in Tennessee and faces three counts of statutory rape by an authority figure and one count of aggravated sexual battery. In federal court, he is also charged with sexual exploitation of a minor, receipt-distribution-possession of child sexual exploitation material, enticement and solicitation of a minor, and interstate transportation of a minor to engage in criminal sexual conduct.

Henley, who served as a full-time minister in Indiana, Tennessee, Kansas, and Texas, and as a session director at a Christian camp in the Oklahoma Panhandle, preached on “Consistent Christianity” in April 2020. He warned against living a life inconsistent with teachings, citing Romans 2:21. He also emphasized the unseen influence ministers have on others, noting that people are watching their actions and words.

Henley’s defense attorney, C. Mark Donahoe, stated that Henley has entered a “not guilty” plea. The next steps in the case will involve the disclosure of discovery, where the prosecution will share evidence with the defense. Donahoe said the defense will evaluate the evidence and prepare accordingly.

Before his arrest, Henley had moved to a youth ministry position with the Washington Avenue Church of Christ in Evansville, Ind. The congregation terminated his employment immediately following his arrest. In a statement, church leaders expressed prayers for accountability, healing, and justice, though they declined an interview request.

The case highlights the importance of accountability and honest dealing, as seen in Proverbs 11:1. It serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with positions of influence, especially within religious communities. Churches of Christ, like many denominations, emphasize the need for integrity and moral consistency in leadership.
