First Mormon Temple in Austria to Be Built in Döbling
The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints is constructing its first temple in Austria, located in Döbling. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 17, marking the start of a three-year project. The temple, situated on a 3,240 square meter site, will feature a building of approximately 1,400 square meters. The existing community house on the property will be demolished to make way for the new structure, while members currently use a different location at Leopoldstädter Böcklinstraße 55.
The temple’s design incorporates neoclassical and modern elements, inspired by the Jerusalem temple of Solomon. Interior features include custom-made stained glass windows with edelweiss motifs. The building will have five floors, with two and a half above ground and two and a half below ground. The site will also include a parking lot with 24 spaces, two barrier-free spots, and bicycle parking.
The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints has approximately 4,700 members in 17 congregations across Austria. Members have previously traveled abroad for temple visits, as temples serve specific purposes such as marriages and other ceremonies, rather than weekly Sunday services. Temples remain closed on Sundays.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by representatives from the Church and guests from various administrative and religious communities. Horst Krönigsberger from the Cultural Office, religious scientist Hans Gerald Hödl, Ümit Vural from the Islamic religious community, and Erika Erber from the Buddhist religious society were among the attendees.
Elder Michael Cziesla, from the Presidency of the European Region of the Church, led a prayer of consecration at the site. He expressed his anticipation for the temple, emphasizing that it will be “a place where faith in Jesus Christ is strengthened and people find peace, hope and confidence.”
The temple’s construction includes connections to the Vienna district heating and cooling system and the installation of a photovoltaic system. The existing tree stock on the site will be preserved and supplemented. The project reflects the Church’s commitment to sustainability and community integration, aligning with its broader mission of service and spiritual growth.
