First United Methodist Church hosts oyster and gumbo supper for charity
First United Methodist Church in Beaumont is preparing for its annual oyster and gumbo supper, a tradition that has been held since at least 1937. The event, scheduled for the last Thursday of February, serves as a fundraiser for several local missions and charitable organizations. These include Sleep in Heavenly Peace Beds, Some Other Place, the Lamar Wesley Foundation, Once Upon a Dream Daycare, the Rainbow Room, and the May is Chrysalis scholarship fund.
Last year’s supper raised over $14,000, with the proceeds supporting these community initiatives. A church representative noted that the funds can have a significant impact on the local area. The event will offer a menu featuring oysters, french fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw, chicken and sausage gumbo, and desserts.
The supper will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and attendees are encouraged to arrive early. The event is structured as an all-you-can-eat affair, allowing guests to enjoy the full menu. The church continues to use this tradition as a way to support local charities and engage with the community.
Through its annual supper, First United Methodist Church demonstrates a commitment to serving others and fostering community spirit. The event not only provides a gathering place for residents but also contributes to the well-being of those in need. The church’s efforts align with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable and to act with justice and mercy.
