Former Fulneck School Building Listed for Sale by Moravian Church
The former Fulneck School building in Pudsey has been placed on the market, marking the end of an era for the historic institution. The school, which operated for 272 years, closed in July 2025 due to declining student numbers and increasing operational costs. Located within the Moravian settlement of Fulneck, the school traces its origins to 1753 and was originally established to provide education for the children of the church’s ministers and missionaries.
The property, a Grade I listed building, is being marketed by Hilco Global real estate solutions as a “rare opportunity to acquire and reposition a substantial former school estate.” The site includes part of the eastern and western terraces, along with a range of ancillary buildings. Offers are being sought for the freehold interest, either as a whole or in separate lots. The marketing brochure suggests potential uses for the site, including continued educational or institutional use, residential conversion, or community and institutional purposes, subject to planning approval.
The Robinson building at the former school will remain under the ownership of the Moravian Church. Fulneck School, which was founded in 1753, had a notable legacy, with famous former pupils including actress Dame Diana Rigg and former Prime Minister H.H. Asquith. The school’s closure has sparked discussions about the future of the site and its potential reuse.
Despite some skepticism about the accessibility of Fulneck, the area is described as being within a five to ten minute walk of Pudsey town centre. The 205 and 4 and 4F buses serve the area, and ample parking is available for visitors. The location’s proximity to major roads such as the Leeds Ring Road and the M62/M1 further supports its connectivity. The site’s potential for redevelopment or repurposing has been highlighted as a significant opportunity for the community and investors alike.
