Israel’s Embassy in Somaliland Remains a Distant Prospect Nearly Ten Months After Recognition
A low-key delegation landed in Somaliland three weeks before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his government’s recognition of the territory, according to Africa Intelligence. The visit was part of strengthened security cooperation between the two administrations, the outlet reported. The report does not identify the delegation’s members.
Nearly ten months after Netanyahu’s recognition, the opening of an Israeli embassy in the self-proclaimed republic remains a distant prospect, Africa Intelligence reported on 19 October 2026. The outlet said the Jewish state’s diplomatic influence on the continent is struggling to take shape despite its stated ambitions.
Israel now has its first head of mission in the territory, which Africa Intelligence describes as a secessionist state. The outlet notes that Israel is the only nation to have granted it recognition.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking steps to help private companies secure more business in Africa, given the difficulties of trading with the continent, the report said. The new ambassador responsible for these issues will, however, need to work with a shortage of financial and human resources, according to Africa Intelligence.
