Mennonite Church USA Implements Enhanced Screening Protocol for Ministry Candidates Starting March 1, 2026
Mennonite Church USA (MC USA) has announced new screening protocols for ministry candidates, effective March 1, 2026. The changes are part of the denomination’s Prevention and Accountability Resource initiative, aimed at fostering safe and accountable leadership within congregations. The updated Ministerial Leadership Information (MLI) process includes more comprehensive background checks to ensure qualified and trustworthy candidates are selected for ministry roles.
The enhanced MLI process is expected to take approximately four weeks to complete, compared to the previous one- to two-week timeline. MC USA encourages candidates to submit their applications early to avoid potential delays in their ministry journey. These adjustments reflect the denomination’s commitment to creating safer environments for all members of the community.
Starting March 1, 2026, the standard MLI fee will be $175, which includes the cost of an FBI background check. A student rate of $140 is also available, with the same FBI check fee. Candidates are responsible for obtaining their own FBI background check, which ranges in cost from $30 to $70. Detailed instructions for securing this check will be provided with each MLI form.
These updates are part of MC USA’s ongoing efforts to prioritize prevention and accountability in ministerial leadership. The changes aim to balance the identification of qualified candidates with the protection of vulnerable community members. The denomination emphasizes that these measures are essential to maintaining the integrity and safety of its ministry practices.
The new screening protocol underscores MC USA’s dedication to transparency and responsibility in leadership. By implementing these enhanced procedures, the denomination seeks to uphold its values of care, justice, and service. The initiative aligns with the broader mission of fostering a safe and supportive environment for all who participate in the ministry.
