NAC SEA Relief Provides Disaster Aid and Long-Term Support Following Typhoon Rai in 2021
The New Apostolic Church’s regional charity, NAC SEA Relief, continues to demonstrate its commitment to aiding communities in times of need. The charity recently released its annual report for 2021, highlighting its efforts to provide support during natural disasters and social crises. The report underscores the organization’s ability to respond swiftly, often through the dedicated efforts of local congregations and pastoral networks.
In December 2021, Typhoon Rai, known locally as Odette, caused widespread devastation across the Philippines. The storm claimed many lives and left thousands homeless, creating an urgent need for relief. NAC SEA Relief mobilized quickly to assist those affected, distributing food, shelter, and essential supplies. District Apostle Urs Hebeisen, president of NAC SEA Relief, expressed gratitude for the community’s rapid response, emphasizing how even small contributions can make a significant difference.
The full impact of the typhoon’s devastation will be reflected in the 2022 annual report, which is set to be published in 2023. In the current report, the focus is on smaller-scale outreach initiatives that brought comfort and hope to individuals. One such effort was led by Benji Quako from the Cebu City congregation, who organized a team to deliver food supplies using motorbikes. The charity also distributed Christmas gifts and survival kits in churches that remained standing after the storm, offering a measure of normalcy during a time of great disruption.
Throughout 2021, the pandemic remained a significant challenge, exacerbating the struggles of marginalized communities. NAC SEA Relief worked to alleviate the social impact of the crisis, particularly for those most vulnerable. The charity provided food donations to families of day laborers who lost work due to lockdowns. Additionally, it took over a stock of 700 kg of oat flour, preventing it from going to waste. Despite logistical challenges, the flour was eventually distributed to the most vulnerable families in collaboration with another charity, STEPS Mission.
While emergency aid and food packs are essential for meeting immediate needs, NAC SEA Relief recognized the importance of long-term support. The charity aimed to help communities rebuild and recover by supplying building materials for damaged homes affected by past typhoons and earthquakes. It also took proactive measures to prevent future disasters, such as providing construction materials for a family at risk of a landslide. By relocating them to safer ground, the charity ensured their home was built with durable materials, offering both immediate and lasting protection.
