The Higher Presidential Committee for Following Up on Church Affairs in Palestine congratulated Bishop Imad Haddad on his election as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land. The committee said his election makes him the fifth bishop to hold this office.

The congratulations were conveyed in a statement issued on Friday, following a phone call between the committee’s chairman, Ramzi Khoury, who is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and the bishop-elect. The committee said it took pride in the message carried by the Lutheran Church and in its national, spiritual, educational and social role. It also cited the church’s continuing efforts to promote justice and citizenship in Palestine.

The committee expressed confidence that Haddad would continue this mission faithfully and capably. It said he would work with the heads of all churches to protect the authentic Christian presence in the homeland and to strengthen unity among them, which it described as necessary in the face of challenges to what it called “our just cause” (John 17:21). The statement wished him success for the good of his church and people, and for the service of Palestine and all humanity.
