“Spain’s Jewish Community Uses Social Media to Counter Rising Antisemitism”

Spain’s Jewish community is leveraging social media to introduce the broader public to Jewish culture and traditions, particularly ahead of Rosh Hashanah. This initiative, led by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), aims to foster understanding and counteract a growing climate of anti-Jewish hostility. The FCJE has launched a series of short videos to provide an accessible introduction to Judaism and the Jewish community in Spain.

The first two videos in the series focus on key aspects of Jewish life and tradition, coinciding with the onset of Rosh Hashanah, which marks the beginning of the Jewish year 5787. This time is traditionally one of celebration, introspection, and looking toward the future.

The FCJE hopes that by presenting Jewish traditions in a simple and accessible format, they can reach a broad audience and increase awareness of Spain’s Jewish community and its heritage. This effort is particularly important given the alarming social climate, with Jews and Israelis facing increasing attacks, harassment, and discrimination.

According to the FCJE’s latest report, antisemitic incidents increased by 14.5 percent last year, with 221 anti-Jewish hate crimes documented in 2025, up from 193 the previous year. This reflects a broader trend of rising antisemitic incidents across Europe and the Western world, following the Hamas-led invasion of southern Israel in October.

Spain is home to an estimated 13,000-15,000 Jews who identify as Jewish or have Jewish parents, alongside a broader population of about 40,000-50,000 non-affiliated individuals with Jewish heritage. This initiative by the FCJE underscores the community’s commitment to fostering understanding and countering the normalization of anti-Jewish hatred.
