Three Choirs Collaborate for Charity Concert at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Barbados
Three choirs from Barbados are uniting for a charity concert at St Mary’s Anglican Church, aiming to raise funds for two important causes. The event, titled *We Have a Gospel to Proclaim*, will take place on Sunday, June 7, starting at 6 p.m. at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Bridgetown. It will feature performances by the St Mary’s Augmented Choir, The Clarion Singers, and The Myriad Singers of Barbados, along with a combined mass choir.
The collaboration brings together the St Mary’s Augmented Choir, directed by Akhanni Drakes, The Clarion Singers led by Derek Marshall, and The Myriad Singers of Barbados, directed by John Bryan. The concert will also include musical accompaniment from the 441 Clarinet Ensemble, the Barbados String Quartet, and trumpeters from the Barbados Defence Force Band. The event is designed to showcase the island’s musical talent while supporting charitable initiatives.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Barbados Cancer Society and the St. Mary’s Church Roof Restoration Project. Organizers expressed a long-held desire to bring the choirs together for a significant musical program that also serves the community. Derek Marshall, director of The Clarion Singers, emphasized that the concert aims to demonstrate how music can unite people around meaningful causes. He described the event as the beginning of future collaborations involving more musicians and charitable efforts.
The concert promises an evening of sacred and inspirational music, with performances by multiple choirs culminating in massed choral presentations. Organizers hope the event will establish a tradition of collaborative performances among Barbados’ musical ensembles and create opportunities to support community-based projects and charitable organizations. Tickets cost $50 and are available from members of the participating choirs.
Patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets early to support what organizers describe as the first of many collaborative musical and charitable ventures. The event reflects a commitment to using artistic expression for the greater good, aligning with the values of community service and collective action. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God, the concert embodies these principles through its focus on unity and service.
