Ambassador Sarah MacIntosh, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a statement at a UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East. She said the United Kingdom condemns the continuing reckless attacks by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and their wider acts of escalation in Yemen and the region.

Quoting Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, MacIntosh said the United Kingdom is appalled by the latest attacks on King Khalid Airport. She said the government’s thoughts were with the families who had lost loved ones and with those injured.

MacIntosh announced that the Council had agreed on a presidential statement just before the meeting, to be adopted later that afternoon. She said it reiterates the Council’s condemnation of Houthi attacks and its solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

MacIntosh noted that the previous week had marked three years since Hamas’s attacks of 7 October 2023, which she described as horrific and as appalling acts against the people of Israel and other nations. Quoting Prime Minister Andy Burnham, she said the United Kingdom remembers those who were killed and offers condolences to all who lost loved ones, were injured, or were taken hostage. Caring for the grieving and the wounded calls the Church to stand with them in their sorrow (Psalm 34:18).

MacIntosh said she had attended a memorial event organised by Israeli colleagues the previous week and heard testimonies from some survivors. She described those testimonies, and the stories of many Israelis and Palestinians, as powerful accounts of the importance of ending the cycle of violence and securing lasting peace for both peoples.

She said that a year earlier the United Kingdom had welcomed President Trump’s 20-point plan, the ceasefire in Gaza, and the adoption of resolution 2803 that followed. MacIntosh said the United Kingdom recognises progress made and continues to support the full implementation of resolution 2803.

MacIntosh also reported that since the ceasefire an average of four people have been killed every day, among them over 300 children. She said civilians are facing a fourth winter in tents and makeshift shelters, amid plummeting temperatures, flooding, open sewage, and accumulating waste, a situation that shows why the vulnerable must be protected (Proverbs 31:8-9).
