Church of the Nazarene Member David Pennington Dies After Battle With Prostate Cancer
David Ray Pennington, a devoted husband, father, and member of the Church of the Nazarene, passed away on October 22, 2024, after a three-year battle with prostate cancer. He was 79 years old and was surrounded by his wife, Cathy Pennington, at the time of his death. Born on June 3, 1945, in Ellensburg, Washington, David was the son of Ray and Lillian Pennington.
David’s early life was rooted in the family farm in Ellensburg, where he spent his childhood. He graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1963 and later joined the United States Navy in 1965, serving at Mare Island Naval Base in northern California. It was during his time in the Navy that he met Cathy Louise Williams on a blind date on New Year’s Eve 1967. The couple married on August 31, 1968, and built a life together, raising three children: Brent, born in 1969, and twins Ryan and Melissa, born in 1973.
Throughout his career, David worked as a laboratory technician and later as the manager of the lab at Memorial Hospital, where he spent 38 years. He was known for his leadership and the strong relationships he formed with colleagues. His life was deeply centered around his family and faith, which played a significant role in his personal and professional endeavors.
David was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church for many years before joining West Valley Church of the Nazarene, where he remained a member for the rest of his life. He actively participated in church leadership, serving on various councils and leading mission trips to Guatemala. These trips focused on providing medical care to underserved communities, reflecting his commitment to service and compassion.
In addition to his faith and family, David had a passion for the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hiking throughout the Northwest. He also took on leadership roles in the Boy Scouts of America, organizing camping trips, community service events, and a significant trip to Philmont, New Mexico, where he connected with scouts from across the country.
David’s legacy lives on through his wife, Cathy; his son Brent and his family; his daughter Melissa and her family; his daughter-in-law Tanisia and her children; his sister Joann; his father-in-law Arthur Williams; Cathy’s siblings; and a wide circle of friends. The family is comforted by the knowledge that David is now reunited with his son, Ryan, who passed away earlier this year.
Memorial services will be held at West Valley Church of the Nazarene on November 23, 2024, at 1:00 pm.
