Churches in Burundi Launch Disability Inclusion Project in Development Programs
The Anglican Church of Burundi and the Friends Church in Burundi have joined forces with the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission to launch a three-year initiative aimed at mainstreaming disability in their development programs. The project, titled “Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Church Development Programmes in Burundi,” was launched on 27 February in Bujumbura. This effort seeks to enhance the livelihoods of persons with disabilities in Burundi through inclusive development strategies.
Representatives from the Union des Personnes Handicapées du Burundi and the Ministry of Human Rights, Business Social Affairs and Gender participated in the project’s launch. Their presence underscores the collaboration between religious institutions and governmental bodies in advancing disability inclusion. The initiative reflects a growing recognition of the role churches can play in advocating for and supporting marginalized communities.
Rev. Aloys Ningabira, the legal representative of the Friends Church in Burundi, emphasized the importance of solidarity with persons with disabilities. He stated, “Let us do what God has called us to do and that is to be in solidarity with persons with disabilities. Let us start with whatever we have in our hands to ensure that this project becomes a reality.” His words highlight the spiritual motivation behind the project and the commitment of church leaders to address social inequities.
Before the project’s launch, clergy and development workers from the Anglican Church of Burundi and the Friends Church in Burundi participated in a two-day training session on disability and development. The training covered key documents such as Burundi’s disability laws and policies, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Sustainable Development Goals, and the WCC Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network’s disability inclusion guidelines. These resources will guide the implementation of the project and ensure alignment with international standards.
The initiative represents a significant step toward integrating disability perspectives into church-led development work. By incorporating legal frameworks, international conventions, and community-based approaches, the project aims to create sustainable change. This collaboration between faith-based organizations and international networks demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing systemic barriers faced by persons with disabilities.
The project’s focus on disability inclusion aligns with broader efforts to promote justice and care for the vulnerable. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, God calls for justice, mercy, and humility in service to others. The churches’ involvement in this initiative reflects a dedication to these principles, seeking to uplift those often overlooked in development efforts. Through this partnership, the Anglican Church of Burundi and the Friends Church in Burundi are working to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included but also empowered within their communities.
