This grant is part of the first wave of funding aimed at empowering community partners in Iowa to tackle the opioid crisis effectively. Attorney General Bird emphasized the importance of collaboration with community partners in winning this battle against opioid addiction.
Cerro Gordo County, which reports a higher percentage of overdose deaths compared to other counties in Iowa, benefits from the North Iowa Justice Support Program’s “Bridge to Recovery.” This initiative involves direct engagement with inmates, offering peer-to-peer support and life skills planning. The funding will also support the SMART Girls program and the Passport to Manhood program, which focus on equipping young people aged 6-18 with the skills necessary to resist peer pressure and manage challenges related to substance use and mental health.
Additionally, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department will utilize part of the grant to acquire a high-temperature, smoke-free narcotic and paraphernalia incineration unit. This unit will be instrumental in safely disposing of narcotics, pharmaceuticals, and related paraphernalia, marking it as the only incineration unit within the community. This initiative reflects a commitment to public safety and health, aligning with the biblical call to care for the well-being of the community, as seen in Isaiah 58:7, which emphasizes seeking justice and aiding the oppressed.
