CityReach Church and Local Officials Host Back-to-School Event with Free Supplies and Community Activities
CityReach Church and The Block Gives Back, alongside City Councilman Bobby Henon, organized a community event on Torresdale Avenue to support students as they returned to school. The 6700 and 6800 blocks were closed for a day of activities, including giveaways and free services.
The Block Gives Back distributed approximately 1,000 book bags filled with school supplies and hygiene essentials as part of its annual Block 2 School initiative. “Mission accomplished,” said Hakeem Ruiz of The Block Gives Back, noting the effort to provide essential items to students.
Henon’s office and CityReach Church collaborated to provide 2,500 hot dogs, water ice, snack bags, and water bottles. Pastor Mark Novales of CityReach emphasized the church’s mission to be a blessing to the community and promote unity. “We try to provide hope for the city. A lot of healing needs to happen,” he said.
This was the fifth year CityReach hosted a free back-to-school event. Previously held at Northeast High School, the event now includes outreach programs for young people and young adults. Novales expressed a desire for the church to be a meaningful presence in the community.
The event featured a variety of activities, including a musical performance, anti-violence prayers, arts and crafts, and free food. Dental care was also provided by St. Christopher’s Foundation for Children Community Oral Health Initiative. State representatives and local officials participated, offering information and support.
The event highlighted community collaboration, with local offices and organizations contributing to the effort. It served as a reminder of the importance of supporting students and families as they begin the school year.
