First United Methodist Church Provides Temporary Classrooms for 290 Frankfort High School Students After Fire

When a fire damaged Frankfort High School in late August, First United Methodist Church (FUMC) opened its Sunday school rooms to serve as makeshift classrooms for approximately 290 students. This arrangement allowed the school to continue its educational mission while the main facility was unavailable.
FUMC Rev. Dr. Leanne Hadley described the initial response as spontaneous rather than a formal committee decision. She noted that dedicated staff and volunteers immediately moved into action, with their projected worries fading as the students and teachers settled into the space.
Frankfort High School principal Joe Rogers emphasized the significance of the support, stating that the school staff felt seen and heard during the crisis. He recalled that when the school asked if the church could assist, the response was an immediate “yes” without hesitation.
Mary Dobbin, a FUMC volunteer and mother of a Frankfort High School graduate, cited her personal connection to the school as her motivation to help. She expressed that helping others is a purpose in life, a belief that drove her enthusiasm to participate in any capacity necessary.
The effort expanded beyond the church to involve other local entities. The Frankfort Plant Board provided stronger internet access to accommodate the high number of users relying on the connection during the temporary relocation.
The presence of the students and teachers brought a distinct energy to the church, according to Hadley. When the students eventually left, the church community expressed sadness at the departure, acknowledging the loss of the vibrant atmosphere the school had brought into the building.
