Historic Quaker Meeting House in Flushing, New York, New York, to Host Weekend Open House With Tours and Performances
The historic Flushing Quaker Meeting House will host an open house on May 5 and 6 at 137-16 Northern Blvd. in Queens, featuring a book talk, a spiritual choir performance and guided tours. The event is part of the “Sacred Sites Open House” program, a project of the New York Landmarks Conservancy that aims to promote the architecture, art and history of sacred places.
Guided tours of the meeting house, which the source describes as the oldest house of worship in New York State, will be available throughout the weekend. The source notes that in its 300-year history, members of the community have gathered there to discuss movements to abolish slavery, establish public education and advance women’s rights. Remembering that record of public concern, the open house invites visitors to see the building where earlier generations met to address those questions (Psalm 78:4).
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, the meeting house will host a book talk led by Joe DiStefano, author of “111 Places in Queens That You Must Not Miss,” and Clay Williams, the photographer for the book. According to the source, they will discuss the history and culture that make Flushing unique.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., the meeting house will host a performance of spiritual songs titled “Sacred Sounds and Settings,” presented by Farah Chandu and the Willow Interfaith Women’s Choir.
The same day, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., John Choe, executive director of the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce, will lead a walking tour of Downtown Flushing called “Flushing Fantastic: Past, Present & Future.” The tour will begin at the meeting house and end at the Dumpling Galaxy restaurant at 42-35 Main St.
