UK Urges International Action to Protect Two-State Solution Amid Israeli Settlement Expansion
The United Kingdom, through its Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Kate Foster, emphasized the importance of protecting the two-state solution during a recent UN Security Council meeting. She noted that throughout High-Level Week, there was a clear and repeated commitment to achieving this solution as the only credible path to a better future for Israelis and Palestinians, based on lasting peace and security for both sides.
Ambassador Foster highlighted that the two-state solution is at risk due to the facts on the ground. She stated that the UK’s Prime Minister has condemned the 7th October 2023 terrorist attack on Israel in the strongest terms, expressing solidarity with Israel against ongoing threats, including from Iran. However, the Prime Minister has also made it clear that this does not justify the Government of Israel’s actions in the West Bank and Gaza.
In the West Bank, Israel continues to expand settlements at a rapid pace, which violates international law and contradicts Resolution 2334. This expansion threatens to sever East Jerusalem from the West Bank and jeopardize the viability of a two-state solution. Alongside settlement expansion, there has been an alarming increase in settler violence, which the Government of Israel must address by preventing all forms of violence and ensuring accountability for perpetrators.
Ambassador Foster pointed out that pardons and decisions not to charge Israeli soldiers who have committed violent crimes send the wrong message. The UK is working with international partners to protect the two-state solution, including by announcing plans to legislate against the import of goods from illegal settlements and to impose sanctions on those who finance, support, or facilitate such settlements.
The UK’s actions reflect a commitment to upholding international law and promoting peace. As Micah 6:8 reminds us, we are to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. In seeking a just resolution to the conflict, the international community must remain steadfast in its efforts to preserve the two-state solution and ensure the security and dignity of all people.
