Israel and Hezbollah Agree to Ceasefire After Lebanon Fighting Threatens U.S.-Iran Talks
On Friday, Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire after a deadly escalation in Lebanon threatened to derail Washington-Tehran peace talks in Switzerland, according to an NBC News report dated June 19, 2026. President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Israel and asked both sides to agree to a ceasefire.
An official Hezbollah source said the group would abide by the ceasefire but that Israelis were still firing and trying to move deeper into Lebanese territory. Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, said Israel was firmly committed to an immediate ceasefire and had halted offensive operations, a step toward peace in practice (Matthew 5:9). The two accounts differ on whether Israeli fire had stopped.
NBC reported that an interim U.S.-Iran agreement signed days earlier stipulated that all fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon, must end immediately. U.S. spy agencies believed Israel would likely continue attacks on Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, potentially jeopardizing a tentative U.S.-Iran peace deal, the report said. Netanyahu and officials in his government criticized the deal and said Israel is not bound by the MOU.
Vice President JD Vance canceled his planned travel to Switzerland, and the Bürgenstock negotiations were temporarily postponed following the Israeli attacks, NBC reported.
A later Eurasia Review report, published in October 2026, said Hezbollah had acknowledged an explosives shipment allegedly bound for Beirut’s southern suburbs. Israeli media reports said Israel could use the shipment to justify further military action. The shipment was allegedly intended to help rebuild Hezbollah’s military capabilities and support attacks on Israeli targets.
According to the same report, Israeli airstrikes hit towns in southern Lebanon on Monday, while military drones flew at low altitude over Beirut. The Lebanese Health Ministry said Israeli military action in Lebanon between March 2 and October 30, 2026, killed 4,389 people and wounded 12,428. The ministry’s combined toll for the two rounds of conflict since October 8, 2023, stood at 8,956 dead and 30,664 wounded. Lebanon says Israel continues to occupy about 700 square kilometers of Lebanese territory.
Israeli newspaper Maariv reported Israeli military preparations for a possible Hezbollah entry into a conflict supporting Iran, including reservist mobilization and strikes across Lebanon. An official Lebanese source said there had been no progress in direct Lebanon-Israel negotiations and that no diplomatic contacts were currently underway.
