Trump Says U.S. War With Iran Will Be Put Away “Very Soon” as Talks Continue
On 2 November 2025, CBS News reported that President Donald Trump said he had spoken on Saturday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and had a “very good talk with him.” CBS said there was no public comment on the call from Netanyahu. Speaking to Right Side Broadcasting Network before a campaign rally in Iowa on Sunday, Trump said the U.S. would put the war with Iran away “one way or the other” very soon.
Iran’s top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, said he hoped there was “rationality” on the U.S. side as diplomatic efforts sought to avert a return to all-out war. According to CBS, Araghchi said Iranian negotiators were in Qatar for talks on a proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the U.S. met several conditions, and that no direct talks were being held with the U.S. Negotiators were working through intermediaries to avoid a wider war (Matthew 5:9).
Maritime incidents were also reported in the Gulf. CBS said a vessel was struck on Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz by “an unknown projectile,” according to a British maritime security agency. Qatar’s state news agency said a Qatari gas tanker, the Al Mayeda, was attacked on Friday by “unidentified objects” while transiting Gulf waters, and that none of the crew were injured. Neither report named who was responsible for these incidents.
Al Jazeera, in a report dated 2 November 2026, gave a different picture of the same period. It said Trump told a gathering at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, on Monday that the Iran deal looked like it was “coming together very nicely.” Trump claimed oil prices had fallen by almost $10 a barrel, which he attributed to expectations that the war on Iran would end soon. The two reports carry different years, and the source material does not reconcile them.
Vice President JD Vance told Al Jazeera’s reporting that Washington had held a number of good conversations with the Iranians and that he and Trump felt optimistic about a negotiated settlement. He said no deadlines had been set for Iran to reach a deal before Trump resumed strikes. Vance also said any agreement would require a firm and verifiable commitment that Iran would not rebuild its nuclear programme.
Iranian officials said their seven-step plan remained unchanged but could now be implemented within two days rather than a week. Al Jazeera reported that the plan includes a swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a return to talks over Iran’s nuclear programme. The CBS report had described the two-day timeline as tied to U.S. conditions, so the sources frame the timing differently. Citing IRNA, Al Jazeera also reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had reportedly granted the government powers to accelerate talks with Washington.
