Moja Love and Nimrod oppose pastor’s R2 million witchcraft defamation lawsuit
Sandlana, known as The Comforter to his congregation in North West, has initiated a R2 million lawsuit against Moja Love presenter Nimrod Nkosi, alleging defamation. The case was filed at the Johannesburg High Court, with Sandlana claiming that Nkosi’s remarks on a recent show damaged his reputation and dignity.
Moja Love’s spokesperson, Nonzwakazi Cekete, confirmed that the channel will defend the lawsuit in court. Sandlana is the leader of the Jerusalem faction that split from the main church at Silo, established by Frederick Modise in 1962. The church is part of the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, emphasizing holiness, spiritual gifts, and a commitment to Christian living.
During the show, Nkosi and Sandlana’s wife, Magalane Sandlana, discussed crime, abuse of women, and witchcraft. Nkosi inquired whether she had faced pressure to marry the clergyman. Sandlana’s affidavit alleges that Nkosi created an impression of him as a controlling, manipulative, and abusive figure who disregarded his wife’s welfare.
The former Jam Alley presenter also asked Magalane if she had contemplated suicide due to Sandlana’s alleged abusive behavior. Sandlana claims these questions implied that he lacked honesty and integrity, and that his actions could lead his wife to consider suicide. He further alleged that Nkosi suggested he had faked his wife’s death to claim an insurance policy.
Nkosi also questioned Magalane about the claim that Sandlana was a criminal and had a history of incarceration. Sandlana argues that these statements, taken together, portrayed him as a hypocrite, a criminal, and someone who engaged in witchcraft. The case highlights tensions between religious leaders and media figures, raising questions about the boundaries of free speech and the protection of reputations.
The situation underscores the importance of accountability and the need for respectful discourse, as emphasized in Proverbs 18:17, which states that “the first to present his case seems right, until another comes forward and questions him.” As the legal proceedings unfold, the community watches closely, mindful of the principles of justice and mercy.
