Row over Handsworth church extension plan sparks noise and parking disputes
The Rev Linda Isiorho, a vicar living next to The United Church of God in Handsworth, Birmingham, has raised concerns over plans to extend the church building. She has cited noise from gospel music and parking issues as the main points of contention. The church, which has been part of the community since 1974, has been granted planning permission for an extension, despite these complaints.
Rev Isiorho, who is not affiliated with a church but works as a chaplain at the local fire station, said the music is loud, though she acknowledged it is only played on specific days. She emphasized that the issue is not about religious conflict but a neighbor dispute over noise and parking. She noted that parking has become a significant problem, with congregations of over 50 arriving in a narrow road, leading to double parking and reported incidents of bumps and scrapes.
The vicar, along with her husband, who serves at St James, has expressed concern that the situation may worsen with the church’s new permissions. The church is now allowed to hold services, weddings, youth clubs, and celebrations on any day between 10am and 10pm. Rev Isiorho said she is speaking on behalf of 11 households affected by the noise and parking issues.
The United Church of God, represented by spokeswoman Loreen Lawson, stated that they have been part of the community for decades and have never faced complaints before. They have also mentioned efforts to address parking concerns and emphasized their commitment to noise and parking management. However, they have been unable to raise the necessary funds for the extension and have requested additional time to complete the project.
The city council’s planning committee approved the extension plans, noting that no changes had occurred since the original permission was granted in 2009. As a result, there were no legal grounds to refuse the extension of time. The church continues to seek funding while maintaining its position that it is committed to being a responsible member of the community.
