Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton to Hold Monthly Labyrinth Walks Starting Nov. 11
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton (UUC of Canton) invites community members to take part in a monthly series of labyrinth walks beginning Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Canton, N.Y.
The series uses a portable seven-circuit labyrinth modeled on the labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral in France, which was built around 1201. Unlike a maze, which has dead ends and branching choices, a labyrinth is a single continuous path that winds through seven concentric rings from the outer edge to the center. The church says the labyrinth was historically used for prayer and symbolic pilgrimage, and that modern labyrinth walking can offer a practice for meditation, stress relief, grief processing and spiritual grounding.
According to the church, sessions will be held on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m., beginning Nov. 11. A brief introductory session for people new to the practice will be offered at 6:45 p.m. before each walk. The monthly schedule alternates between silent walks and walks accompanied by music.
To protect the cloth labyrinth floor, participants are asked to walk in socks. Cloth cover booties will be provided for those who need to wear shoes. For people who are unable to walk or who prefer another format, lap labyrinths and coloring pages will also be available.
The church is located at 3½ East Main Street. It describes itself as dedicated to fostering an inclusive community and promoting spiritual growth across diverse backgrounds, and it holds regular Sunday services at 10:30 a.m. Its emphasis on gathering people from different backgrounds in shared practice reflects the value of unity (Psalm 133:1).
