Mennonite Good Shepherd Center in Hualien, Taiwan, Awards Scholarships to 31 Students
The awarding ceremony for the “Year 115 Mr. Li Ming-rong Scholarship” was held on October 31 at the Fangjiaoshi Creative Cuisine Restaurant in Chenxing Hall. A total of 31 elementary, junior high and senior high (vocational) school students received the award.
The scholarship was founded by Li Ming-rong in Hualien to support students in remote rural areas. The Hualien Good Shepherd Center has administered it for 18 years. Each year from September to November, the center holds an awarding ceremony to honor children who remain diligent and eager to learn despite facing adversity.
In addition to the scholarships, the center prepared white rice and practical living supplies for the children and their parents. The center said it hoped this assistance would convey its sincere blessings to each family.
Chu Yu-kuei, Executive Director of the Hualien Good Shepherd Center, recalled earlier visits with Li Ming-rong, who she said was concerned about developments in Hualien and attentive to the schooling conditions of its students. She said she hoped the scholarship would help each child feel capable. She also distinguished between cleverness, which she described as completing things efficiently, and wisdom, which she described as completing things beautifully.
Chen Chia-lung, a social worker, attended the ceremony representing the Hualien County Government Department of Social Affairs. He praised the recipients for persisting through heavy trials to shape their futures, saying their resilience and dedication made the county deeply admire them. The students’ steady effort through hardship reflects working wholeheartedly at a task (Colossians 3:23).
The center thanked Li Ming-rong and his family member Li Hsin-te for continuing the scholarship and carrying forward his support.
Several guests who support the children also attended, including Cheng Yu-chang, pastor of the Mennonite Fu’an Church; Pao Chang-kuei, evangelist; Mrs. Wen Le-yi, a pastor’s wife; and leading teachers from the Fengtian Presbyterian Church who accompanied the award recipients: Yen Yu-hua, Chang Yu-hsuan and Li Chia-hao.
